Jumbo NurseryStone: FAQ's

How tall can Jumbo NurseryStone be built?
Jumbo NurseryStone is perfect for projects 0 – 4 ’ in height.

What if my wall is taller than four feet?
In most states a homeowner can build a wall less than four feet tall without having an engineer sign off on the plans. If you need to go taller than four feet, you will need an engineer to "stamp" your drawings, but check your local building codes to determine what they legislate. Jumbo NurseryStone can not go taller than four feet, but Stonewall and Sahalee can.

You can also build a taller wall with Jumbo NurseryStone if you terrace your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do the blocks “stay” together?
On the back of the block there is a “lip.” This lip sits over the back of the block so you do not need any mortar. The lip locks the blocks together and provides strength to your project. It also immediately gives you proper set-back and alignment so your wall is always lined up.

What is the base?
The base is what your project will set upon. A foundation.

Does the base need to be concrete?
No, only if your soils are extremely poor. A good ¾ minus gravel, well compacted, should be all you need for a strong base.

At what point should I begin my project?
At the lowest point of your project.

What is backfill?
It is the material used to fill in behind your project and between the blocks. Use ¾ minus crushed gravel for good drainage and prolonged life to your project.

How important is it that my base is level?
Your project will only be as strong as the base you set it upon. It is critical that your base be well compacted and level to maintain structural integrity and the beauty of the wall.

How do I compact the base?
For smaller projects we suggest a hand tamper which can be rented. Larger projects might need a vibrating compactor which is also available for rental. In a pinch you can nail two 2 x 4’s together in a “T” an compact the base, we do not recommend this method.

What is a course?
A course is a row of block.

Why am I burying a portion of my first course?
Along with a level well compacted base, burying a portion of the first course provides stability to the project.

What is a running bond?
A running bond is how the block is stacked on top of each other. You want to avoid vertical lines in the project. The block should be stacked with the second course setting in the middle of the first course, so that a vertical line does not extend through two courses.

What is a terraced wall?
A terraced wall is a wall that is built in multiple tiers. See illustration below.

How do I build a terraced wall?
There is a specific distance between your front wall and back wall. Measure the height of the wall in front, than take that measurement and multiply it by two. So, lets say your front wall is four feet. Then the distance from the face of your front wall to the face of your back wall can not be less than 8 feet.

What do I do if I need to cut a block?
Sometimes a project will need you to “split” a block. (Make sure you are wearing proper eye protection before splitting the block as concrete chips will fly from the blocks.) Take a chisel and score the block along all sides. Keep hitting the chisel along the score until it splits. You can also use a masonry blade on a circular saw to cut the block.
